Notes on Pop

installation, video (2020) exhibited at the Sandberg Instituut alongside works by David Donald

Notes on Pop started with my fascination for the male-dominated skateboarding scene, specifically in relation to the infamous skate spot in front of the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA). Through writing I explored my own ideas about this world, partly based on my time as an exchange student in Barcelona. My strong emotions for the matter (prejudice, envy, attraction) soon made me realize that this was just as much a project about the other side of it, about all the girls like me just waiting around for the skater boys to be done.

By consciously using these two binary stereotypes (active boys vs. passive girls), as well as appropriating certain elements from the skateboarding aesthetics (stickers, fish eye lens)  I could explore social structures that are exceeding far beyond the skate park.
